East Timor’s former president and independence fighter Xanana Gusmao is to become the country’s new prime minister.
President Jose Ramos Horta ended weeks of uncertainty on Monday and announced he had invited Gusmao and his new party, the National Committee for the Reconstruction of East Timor (CNRT), to form a government in an alliance with several coalition parties.
“I have taken the decision to invite the Alliance of the Parliament Majority to form the government,” Ramos-Horta told reporters, referring to Gusmao’s coalition.
“The AMP has proposed Xanana Gusmao become prime minister. I have accepted it.”
Born in 1946 José Alexandre Gusmao is regarded as a hero in East Timor where he led the resistance against the Indonesian occupation for two decades.
Elected the country’s first president after independence in 2002, Gusmao decided to compete for the position of prime minister after last year’s crisis attributed to poor leadership by the rival Fretilin party, in particular its secretary-general, Mari Alkatiri.
Tension remains high in Dili, with the Fretilin already claiming the decision to appoint Gusmao is illegal and warning it would not co-operate with the new government.
Ramos Horta’s decision follows the failure of negotiations between the two major parties to form a united national government.
He said he merely followed the constitution in nominating Gusmao as the new prime minister.
The country has been in political limbo since parliamentary elections in June left no single party with a clear majority.
The powerful Fretilin party won 21 of the parliament’s 65 seats, but the CNRT alliance has 37 seats altogether.
Gusmao will be sworn in on Wednesday and the government announced soon after.
